Growth Through Learning and Support
The Community Support Specialist Program (CSSP) program is a pioneering peer led and taught 'best-practices' recovery program that helps adult persons recovering from mental illness and substance abuse enroll in a 9–month college education program through the University of Maine System. Students who complete five college courses (15 credit hours) receive the MHRT/C provisional certification required for employment in the mental health system. ‘Best practices' here means peer and natural supports, which have been found to be an important ingredient for successful recovery and decreasing reliance on formal helping systems.
The CSSP program is the result of a unique and creative collaboration between Medical Care Development (MCD), the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA), and the University of Southern Maine 's Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Services.

“The CSSP program serves as a center piece of what can be accomplished when a few dedicated people get together to determine a small consumer directed system.”
